Buyer’s Guide 2012 Update: Pumps and Valves Valve actuator designed to improve speed, accuracy of dispensing valves
Nordson EFD introduces the BackPack valve actuator, a compact, fast-acting solenoid that is designed to improve the productivity of EFD dispense valves, which are used on automated production lines to apply adhesives, lubricants and other assembly fluids in accurate, repeatable amounts.

The dispense system component can help medical technology manufacturers produce more units of their devices in less time by accelerating valve response. Also, faster valve actuation allows the smaller fluid deposits required today for assembling many advanced medical devices to be generated.
Incorporating advanced miniature solenoid technology, the BackPack mounts the solenoid used to open and close the valve directly on the valve’s air cylinder rather than on a separate fixture. This enables certain Nordson EFD valves to be cycled two to three times faster. Also, valve actuation can be completed in as little as 5 to 6 ms, and cycle rates as high as 800 actuations per minute can be achieved. By contrast, typical valve actuation speeds and cycle rates, according to Nordson, are 15 ms and 400 cycles.
The BackPack actuator is made of lightweight materials for easy end-of-arm installation. It has a low-profile design that facilitates centre-to-centre mounting. The device is available preinstalled on new Nordson EFD valves, or it can be ordered separately for retrofitting on existing valves.
