Within the scope of the agreement, Logica will support the EPO in setting up a case management system that will be used to digitally process patent registrations at all stages of the process through awarding of the patent. This system, which the partners called comprehensive, secure and innovative, will comprise the patent search, submission of the registration to the patent office, publication of the registration, objective appraisal, and the processing of such legal remedies as opposition procedures and complaints, among other functions. Logica and the EPO expect it to make both the registration of patents by applicants and inventors and the processing of patent applications more efficient and cost-effective.

“The aim of the agreement with Logica is to modernise our IT infrastructure so that not only will we benefit from a more streamlined patenting process, but companies, researchers and inventors will be able to use the patent system more efficiently as well,” said the chairman of the EPO, Benoît Battistelli.

The knowledge-based patent management system is intended to help both those who submit a patent registration and those who examine the application at any stage of the process. The EPO believes the new system will reduce the number of interactions between applicants and the office. The current schedule makes provision for some users to be able to take advantage of the overhauled online submission process as early as in April 2013.
