Software Real-time operating system complies with IEC 62304
QNX Software Systems, a provider of software platforms for embedded systems, has expanded its range of products and services for medical equipment manufacturers in order to reduce the level of complexity and expenditure involved in developing safety-critical products requiring official approval.

One new item from QNX is the QNX Neutrino real-time operating system (RTOS) for medical equipment. The system is compliant with the 62304 standard that defines software life-cycle processes for the development of medical software. Also new are QNX services covering on-site audits, the provision of data for operational reliability, training courses in the design of reliable systems, and support in fulfilling conformity requirements.
A focus on operability
“Medical equipment developers have to comply with an increasingly long list of regulations and are additionally faced with increasing system complexity and a variety of connectivity requirements,” says Grant Courville, director of product management at QNX Software Systems. “Despite all this, the systems they develop have to be easy and intuitive to use.” Such systems would include infusion pumps, patient-monitoring systems, blood- and fluid-analysis systems, MRT systems, and robot-assisted surgical systems, among others.
Courville continues: “Based on our extensive experience with embedded systems in medical equipment and other security-relevant systems, we’ve now developed a series of products and services ranging from training through to consulting. This allows for a reduction of development complexity and expense and sees us supporting our customers so that their products fulfil the corresponding conformity requirements such as FDA 510(k).”
The release of the QNX Neutrino RTOS for medical equipment is planned for the second quarter of 2012. The new services are available immediately.
