According to Brian Reilly, Marketing and Sales Director, Medical Implants, it is the platinum cure system which makes the silicone foam unique. “The low-viscosity material will cure at room temperature and create a foam in about 20 minutes, but also gives the customer the option to cure more rapidly in even only seconds, depending on the temperature.”
A platinum catalyst allows silicones to be formulated to provide a wide range of physical properties, adjustable work times and reaction rates if cured in the right conditions. Nusil has been working on implantable silicones for many years and can now offer the platinum cure medical foam for a broad range of applications, Reilly explains.
“The foam is ideal for keeping wounds dry and clean and could also be cured on the skin to customise a bandage to a patient,” he explains. “Our low density platinum cure medical foam also makes aesthetic implants relatively lighter than silicone gel-filled implants. Also, its platinum cure system makes it unique and very feasible for use in medical devices, as silicone foams have traditionally utilised a tin cure system, which required atmospheric moisture to cure and evolved leaving groups during the curing cycle.”
Apart from the platinum cure foam, Nusil is exhibiting its broad portfolio of silicones for the healthcare and medical implant industries, including best-in-class silicone adhesives with various cure profiles and a competitively-priced Class VI supported line of elastomers.
Members of the Class VI SIL-59X0 line are designed for injection moulding of parts requiring a material with a high durometer including moulded rubber stoppers, gaskets, seals or valves. | bs
