Buyer’s Guide 2012 Update: Electrical/Electronic Components Piezoresistive pressure sensors generate high-resolution digital signals
Sensortechnics offers custom piezoresistive pressure sensors to fulfil demanding pressure measurement requirements in medical technology. Using a low-noise amplifier whose output is connected to a 24-bit analogue-to-digital converter, the sensors generate high-resolution digital signals comparable to those from analogue sensors, with a very high signal-to-noise ratio.

Available from 2.5 mbar full scale, these sensors employ a microcontroller with flexibly programmable correction algorithms for temperature compensation and linearisation of the signal-to-pressure curve. They achieve very high accuracy, with a typical total error band of 0.1%, and feature response times as fast as 250 µs.
Custom calibration and signal-processing options
Sensortechnics offers numerous customer-specific calibration, signal-processing and signal-transmission options for its microcontroller-based pressure sensors. For example, it is possible to calibrate various pressure ranges within the total pressure range of the sensor, with different resolutions and accuracies. This functionality should be especially interesting for manufacturers of respirators, whose equipment detects patient respiratory airflow via a differential-pressure measurement and requires especially high sensitivity in the lower pressure range in order to accurately and quickly detect the lowest levels of respiration.
Further, the company provides custom digital sensor interfaces (I2C, SPI) and programs transmission protocols and additional functions, such as status requests, diagnostic messages and an auto-zero function.
