Buyer’s Guide 2012 Update: Electrical/Electronic Components Mechanical tactile switch sealed to IP67 tolerates dusty environments

The compact B3SL mechanical tactile switch from Omron is sealed to IP67 (IEC 60529) against ingress from moisture and dust. The protection against dust enables the switch to operate for 100,000 cycles even in rough environmental conditions.

The switch offers long-term functional reliability and makes a clear and precise actuation sound. It is actuated in a vertical direction with a force of 1.96 N. The noise made by switching on or off functions as an operational feedback response. The switch’s medium stroke, with a pretravel of 0.3 mm, is achieved by means of a rubber plunger and provides a comfortable feel.

The dimensions of the B3SL are 6.2 x 6.5 x 3.4 mm. Designed for switching currents from 1 mA at 5 V DC to a maximum of 50 mA at 12 V DC with a resistive load, the switch offers an isolation resistance of 100 MΩ at 100 V DC and a contact resistance of 100 mΩ. It has a maximum bounce time of 5 ms and functions in ambient temperatures between –25°C and 90°C.

Use in medical technology

The B3SL expands the already comprehensive Omron portfolio of mechanical tactile switches to include applications in medical electronics and process controllers, including keyboards with foil covers and custom keyboards. The IP67-rated versions keep switch contacts from becoming contaminated in dusty environments and allow printed circuit boards to be cleaned in immersion baths.
