Pilot runs and small production runs of plastic parts in biomedical engineering can be costly for developers because they generate high tooling costs at a stage when necessary changes can still be expected. This is where the rapid prototyper Proto Labs offers assistance as a provider of plastic injection moulded and CNC parts.

Developers can forward their 3D CAD models directly to Proto Labs via the latter’s purpose-built Internet platform. Proto Labs engineers then inspect the models for feasibility. Just one day after receiving approval from Proto Labs, customers can hold the high-quality new part in their hands. This service is offered at prices highly competitive with those of the classic prototyping method and results in more-durable prototype parts.

“The Proto Labs team has an immense amount of experience in the CAD/CAM segment and a correspondingly sophisticated online platform,” explains Thomas Langensiepen, the country manager for Proto Labs in Germany. “This is augmented in Europe by a high-speed CNC production facility in England and an affiliated plastic-injection-moulding department using the latest machinery and techniques. This combination produces speed and quality never seen before in the manufacture of small production runs.”

At Medtec Europe, Proto Labs is demonstrating how two of its services assist biomedical engineering companies. These are Protomold for plastic-injection moulding and Firstcut for CNC-machined metal and plastic parts.
