MSI’s form-fold-set (FFS) technology for pleating and folding low-profile angioplasty and stent-delivery balloon catheters has advanced a step with the addition of this integrated protective-film capability. The protection imparted by a PTFE film integrated in the balloon coatings is intended by the equipment supplier to help medical device manufacturers deal with the complex process challenges the next generation of drug-eluting balloon catheters will face.

The integrated film protects balloon coatings from damage and eliminates the potential for cross-contamination that can occur with conventional pleating and folding techniques. Using the FFS975S, manufacturers of drug-eluting balloons will be able to produce balloons with minimal folded profiles and at the same time protect the drug coating from impairment. The machine offers programmable logic control of processing with a touch-screen PC human–machine interface. It can be supplied in a range of configurations to suit various manufacturers’ individual product and process requirements.
