Versatile 6-Axis Sensor for Measuring Force, Momentum

The FTNet force and momentum sensor is compatible with many communication protocols and thus can be used in many applications.

The FTNet 6-axis force/momentum sensor from Schunk has many uses. The versatile sensor features high-speed data output, four communication protocol options, remote monitoring via local-area network (LAN), and configuration through an Internet interface. Its 14 available frame sizes together cover load ranges between 12 and 40,000 N.

FTNet offers Ethernet, Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet and CAN-bus connectivity and thus interface compatibility for a multitude of applications. It can be used for product tests, for robotic assembly or processing tasks such as grinding and polishing, and for robotic surgery in rehabilitation and neurology applications. The sensor enables the automation of difficult assembly, processing and finishing tasks that hitherto could be performed only manually or by means of complex special machines.

Schunk’s sensor measures both force and torque in all six degrees of freedom. Signal output is via high-speed Ethernet at up to 7,000 Hz or via CAN. Thus, highly dynamic control concepts can be realized. The sensor can simply be connected to the LAN for remote monitoring. System settings can be configured, displayed and adjusted via the Web interface. In addition, demonstration software provides a graphical view of the 6-axis measurements in real time.

In order to ensure reliable operation, the FTNet features cable breakage detection, overload protection and temperature compensation. The system consists of the sensor, a shielded robot-compatible DeviceNet cable, and a network box with Ethernet and a DeviceNet/CAN-bus interface.
